Only 8 per cent of company cars in Switzerland are electric

A new study by YouGov, commissioned by AutoScout24, shows how important company cars are for employees. It also compares company cars with other employee benefits and reveals where Swiss companies stand when it comes to electrifying their fleets.

Among working respondents, around a quarter of households have a company car. The most common types are saloons, SUVs and estate cars. Most company cars in Switzerland still have a combustion engine (68%), while only 8% are fully electric. When asked about their preferences, 30% said they would like a petrol or diesel car, 28% would prefer a fully electric vehicle, and 17% would choose a mild or full hybrid.

Only 11% of respondents said their employer has an internal rule to buy only electric vehicles. By comparison, at SMG Swiss Marketplace Group, which includes AutoScout24, 82% of the fleet is already electric. By 2028, the company aims for a fully electric fleet. “The study shows there is still room for improvement in electrifying Swiss company fleets. For car dealers, this gap is an opportunity to support customers through this transition,” says Alberto Sanz de Lama, Managing Director of AutoScout24 at SMG Swiss Marketplace Group.

A mix of fuel types creates opportunities

About two-thirds of those surveyed (63%) would be very happy to be offered a company car – men (68%) slightly more often than women (54%). The main advantages mentioned are cost savings (51%), less effort for maintenance and repairs (42%), and making everyday work easier (29%). In French-speaking Switzerland, company cars are seen as more attractive (61%) than in the German-speaking part (53%). However, other job benefits are sometimes even more popular: 49% would prefer a job that includes a Swiss Travelcard (GA) over one with a company car – especially women (55% compared with 44% of men). Financial bonuses (48%), contributions to health insurance premiums (43%), and extra days of holiday (40%) are also highly valued.

Company cars as a practical mobility option

The company car has largely lost its status as a symbol of success. According to the study, the main reason for wanting one today is practicality. Willingness to give up salary in exchange is limited: almost half (48%) would not give up any salary for a company car. Only 22% of men and 11% of women would consider giving up CHF 251 to 500. Most respondents (66%) believe it is important that employees can freely choose between a company car and other mobility options. For many, a company car is a welcome extra – but no longer essential.
